Show Him the Turkeys

A couple people have asked me about how Mark is handling the vegetarian thing...how I "get" him to go along with it.

First, we often have vegetarian meals, just because they are good. The meat isn't missed.

Second, when I stopped eating meat I didn't really tell Mark about it. I just made vegetarian meals for every meal that I cooked and didn't order meat when out.

Third, at two weeks off meat I asked Mark if he had noticed that I stopped. He hadn't noticed.

Fourth, I was making great vegetarian meals at home. He was microwaving chicken to go with some of them.

Finally, he noticed me making faces at the www.goveg.com website and asked what I was reading. I showed it to him and said I don't think I can buy meat at the market anymore. He checked out the site for a while and said he's on board. Mark excersizes regularly and works hard to keep his weight in check. A meatless diet will help with that, too. (My body aches are much improved since quitting meat, a common side effect.)

Divina will eat what I give her. If she wants chicken nuggets I'll tell her we don't have any.

We are both really excited about finding vegetarian recipes. I think it's becoming a competition. Mark wants to try some faux meat recipes. These are things like veggie burgers or "meat"loaf. I'm liking rices, grains, beans, etc. We are thinking of ways to make the meals more substantial. Breads might help.

The bottom line is that people (me before three weeks ago) eat meat not knowing how badly the animals are abused. Once you have the knowledge, you can't stomach eating them. To me it has become discusting. If you want your spouse to quit, too, show him/her your knowledge.
