Sunny California My Behind

When the wind is strong, it blows stuff off trees, which litter the ground and threaten to damage passing cars. There are spooky palm trees everywhere. I've learned recently (thanks, Wendy J.) that palm trees cast off something called "palm frons" (I don't even know how to spell that). These are the dead leaves that, when they die, lay flat on the trunk and must be removed by under paid tree trimmers. Then today I observed that palm trees also cast off very, very large bits of bark during windy weather. These weird things are huge! They look a bit like wet cats laying all over the road, well, if cats were prone to laying in the road when wet, which they don't, typically, unless they are dead, which isn't a pleasant thought at all, anyway.

I took Divina to the beach last week. She, at first, was very much interested in going back up the steps to the familiar street. The ocean seemed too strange a sight for my little explorer. Soon though, she noticed the large amount of sand and had a great time digging and watching the "peoples" all around. (Divina says "peoples" when she sees people, in much the same way she says "lions" or "monkeys" when she sees them at the zoo.) A few minutes into the dig, she looks at me and says in a definate tone "sand box." Yes, that's one big sand box.

We bought some new furniture. We bought a green version of the brown sofa that existed in my childhood house on Lamar Street. Sofa, arm chair and ottoman, actually. We are now hip and seriously in debt. We also live at the mall. If you drive out of our appartment (condo actually) complex you will find yourself face to face with a HUGE mall and abundant strip malls, shops, groceterias, and convenient businesses. There is also the Grand Buffet where we learned that Divina loves sushi. I mean she shoves it in her mouth continuing to munch while stuffing and chewing until it's all gone, then she looks at us and says "more peees."

Palm fronds are a whole section of leaves - the stem and all of the leaves connected to it. The only reason I know this is from Palm Sunday at Sunday school as a kid, and we all got fronds to wave at an imaginary Jesus on a donkey in the chapel.

Divina eating sushi! And loving it! That's so cool!

Happy New Year to you and the family!
