Remember Mark's weird scrape/gash on his shoulder from his mountain bike accident? It's almost completely healed. And it doesn't look like there will be a scar at all. Just after the event, I saw a news story about a recent study of children's cuts and methods of healing them. They are now recommending keeping the wound covered. We used to let it air out as much as possible while keeping it clean. Now, cover it. We did just that. I'd put neosporin on it once a day and bandage it. He'd remove the bandage to shower on the next day and I'd cover it right after the shower. I can't begin to tell you how amazed I am at how quickly this thing healed! I've never seen anything like it. Mark's dad, Oscar, said that is the old Filipino old-wives-tale on how to heal a wound, too. Keep it covered. It works.

I wish Chris would have done that when he got a nasty bruise on his shins! He had it exposed for the world to see and it was so very nasty. he wouldn't listen to me as my mom also believed in the cover it up theory! Now there is a nasty scar but he doesn't care. It took a very long time to heal and we had the pleasure of watching those unsightly scabs everyday until it fell off. Christopher kept trying to pick them off and always pointed to the thing saying "BooBoo"
I could have helped it heal so much better but I am not strong enough to hold him down to apply a bandaid and neosporin :-(
U.S. medicine must have finally taken a clue from Filipina moms and realized that covering-up-the-wound is a good thing. I found out when I was breastfeeding Hana, which turned my nipples into festering blood-blistered sacks of pus. The lactation nurse gave me some cooling gelatinous circles ("Soothies") to put on them to speed healing. They really worked! Apparently inspired by "new" advances in American wound care.
Props to moms everywhere for knowing what's best!
