Brown Like Me

Today when I picked up Divina from school she was comforting a little girl who was crying. She does that often. But today she was stroking the girl's hair and looking closely at her face. Then she smiled and said "She's brown like me!" I said, "Yes, she has brown eyes and brown hair and her skin is pink like Mommy's." Then Divina looked at her again and defiently said "She's just like me!" The girl was white. This concerns me very much. I've been trying hard to find a dance school with other black kids, but haven't had any luck. The demographics of this area are mostly white or hispanic. My heart is just breaking here. Indianapolis was a better place for our family in this way. She's supposed to start ballet classes tomorrow, but the school is all white. So this afternoon I'm determined to at least scope out some other possibilities online. The reason the dance class is so important to me isn't the dance itself. It's just that if I'm going to enroll her in an activity, I'd like it to be one where there is some diversity.

I'm so sorry Carrie. I suspect I will be dealing with much of the same issues in a year or 2. Unfotunately, you may have to move your search to an area much further than where you reside. I don't even know who to ask. Oh wait yes I do. Let me check someone and I'll get back to you.

I am sorry too. I hope you can find a place that better reflects your baby girl's beauty back at her :) But I hope she enjoyed ballet class all the same.

Oceanside seems to be more demographically diverse than the other "North County" cities...you might have better results finding a program there.
