Each week Divina and I travel to the library where she runs around, jabbering about this and that. Meanwhile, I grab books from the children's section's shelves in hopes of capturing a good one. Sometimes I hit a winner. This week I found "Night Garden: Poems from the World of Dreams" by Janey S. Wong, illustrated by Julie Paschkis. Here's my favorite from the book:
Whose Face Is This?
I do not recognize
these eyes.
The smile is brighter
than my own.
This hair is not the same
thin hair
that flattens
in the morning air.
Whose face is this
I see tonight?
Is this the face I wear
inside
my skin,
behind the mask
you see?
Whose face is this?
Can it be me?
